FEDESSA, the European industry association for self storage companies, recently released the European Industry Report 2019, a comprehensive annual report on trends and developments in the European self storage industry. A glimpse into the (near) future is not shunned. The report can be downloaded from the website of FEDESSA. For those who don’t have the time to read it, we’ve already got a few currants out of the porridge.

Last month, news reached us that the investment vehicle Berkshire Hathaway, the company of famed investor Warren Buffett, will become active in the U.S. self-storage market. What does that mean for the market?

In the Netherlands recently a supermarket commercial was shown starring a supermarket manager, actor Harry Piekema, welcoming customers who had been away for years, but finally returned to his supermarket. There may also be a ‘welcome back’ to your storage facilities.

Three of the largest U.S. storage companies; Additional Space Storage, Life Storage and CubeSmart reported from the start of the corana crisis in March that new customers were staying away, existing customers were canceling their units and that they suffered increasing problems with collecting payments; for example, the number of succesful direct debits at Extra Space Storage fell from 98 to 93%.
